About the Show
Trick or Threat: Hacker and the Fed Goes Live for Halloween
Hacker and the Fed is going live again, and this time we’re doing it Halloween style. Chris Tarbell spent his FBI career tracking down cybercriminals, and Hector Monsegur was one of the people he tracked down. Today they’re close friends who break down real cyberattacks every week on their podcast, and on Oct. 29 they’re inviting listeners to join in on the fun.
Will Chris and Hector show up in costume? Maybe. Will we tell you what they’re wearing? Absolutely not. That information is classified until 5:30 PM ET on Oct. 29.
Can’t make it? Register anyway. We’ll email the full replay to everyone who signs up once the show wraps. You’ll miss the giveaways and the costume reveal, but you’ll still catch every story that’s covered.
Here’s what’s on the agenda:
The month's scariest cyber stories
Chris and Hector walk through the hacks, breaches, and cybercrime cases they think security teams should be paying attention to right now.
Open Q&A from the chat
Ask about attacker tradecraft, what’s on Chris’ and Hector’s radar right now, or how two people on opposite sides of the same case ended up as co-hosts.
Prize giveaways
Hacker and the Fed Yeti tumblers and one very special bobblehead. Yes, it's real. Yes, it's Hector. It nods along to everything you say, which makes it the most agreeable version of him ever made.
Meet Your Hosts
Two Former Rivals, Now Great Friends.
Hector Monsegur
Hector Monsegur has spent more than 25 years in offensive security, and he’s seen it from both sides of the law. As “Sabu,” he was a leading figure in Anonymous and co-founded the hacking group LulzSec, which made headlines in 2011 for breaching major corporations and government agencies. After his arrest that year, he cooperated with the FBI and helped investigators understand how groups like LulzSec operated.
Today, Hector is co-founder and Chief Research Officer at SafeHill, where his attacker’s-eye view shapes what SecureIQ tests and how it validates real exploit paths.
Chris Tarbell
Chris Tarbell led some of the most significant cybercrime investigations in FBI history. He started at the Bureau as a computer forensic examiner, responding to terrorism, botnet, and cybercrime cases around the world, and joined the FBI’s cybercrime squad in New York as a Special Agent in 2009.
He was the lead investigator on the case that brought down Anonymous and LulzSec leadership. He also led the team that took down Silk Road, the billion-dollar dark web marketplace, and arrested its founder, Ross Ulbricht.
Today, Chris is a Founding Partner at NAXO, where he focuses on cyber investigations and incident response, and he advises SafeHill on government sector work.
